🌟 IS HOUSTON SAFE for Texas Aggies?? 🌟

Howdy y’all 👋 — as a brand-new Texas A&M grad who just made the move to Houston for my first job, one of the first questions I had (and I bet a lot of other Aggies do too) was: “Is Houston actually safe to live in?”

I’ll be real with you — moving from College Station to Houston is a BIG change. College Station feels like a bubble where you know half the people you see, and you rarely worry about crime. Houston? It’s a full-on major city with over 2.3 million people. With that size comes both amazing opportunities (jobs, nightlife, restaurants, sports, culture — you name it) and some areas you’ll want to avoid.

The Reality of Safety in Houston

Houston has safe pockets and not-so-safe pockets. It’s not “all bad” or “all good.” A lot depends on what part of Houston you choose to live in.

Safer, Popular Areas for Young Professionals & Aggies:

The Heights – Trendy, walkable, filled with coffee shops, bars, and young professionals.

Midtown / Montrose – Close to downtown, fun social scene, lots of apartments, but you’ll need to be aware of petty crime.

River Oaks / Post Oak – More upscale, higher rent, but generally very safe and polished.

Washington Corridor – A hotspot for nightlife with decent apartment options.

Areas to Be Cautious In:

Some parts of Third Ward and Fifth Ward can be rougher.

Near the Ship Channel and industrial zones aren’t ideal for safety or lifestyle.

Certain South and Southeast Houston pockets have higher crime rates.

The truth? Houston is so big that you’ll find safe and unsafe blocks right next to each other. That’s why researching your neighborhood (or better yet, using a locator who knows the city) is key.

Safety Tips for Aggie Grads Moving Here

Pick your apartment wisely – Don’t just go for the cheapest option; look at reviews, lighting, gates, and surrounding businesses.

Parking garages & cars – Break-ins happen, so never leave valuables visible.

Get to know your area – Day vs. night can feel totally different. Walk around before you sign.

Trust the Aggie Network – Reach out to other Aggies already in Houston. We’ve got each other’s backs!

Stay city-smart – Houston isn’t College Station. Be aware, lock your doors, and make safe choices when you’re out.

Final Takeaway

So… is Houston safe for Aggies?
✅ Yes — if you pick the right neighborhood, stay aware, and make smart choices.
❌ No — if you expect it to feel like Aggieland where you can leave your truck unlocked and your bike unchained.

For me, Houston has already been worth it. The career opportunities, fun lifestyle, and huge Aggie presence here make the city exciting. Safety is something you manage — and once you learn your area, you’ll feel right at home.
