Why I Said YES To Having a Roommate in My New City – Texas Aggie Grad POV

🌟 Why I Said YES To Having a Roommate in My New City – Texas Aggie Grad POV 🌟

Howdy y’all! 🤠 As a brand-new Texas A&M grad starting out in a completely new city, I had one of the biggest housing decisions to make right out of the gate: Should I live solo or find a roommate?

After plenty of late-night budgeting sessions, Aggie chats, and coffee-fueled apartment tours, I made my decision—I chose to live with a roommate. And honestly? It’s been one of the best choices I’ve made since graduation. Let me break down why.

💰 The Financial Factor: Stretching My Aggie Dollars

Let’s be real. Right after college, money is tight. Between student loans, moving costs, and getting started in my career, every dollar counts. Splitting rent and utilities with a roommate instantly cut my housing costs by almost half.

That decision didn’t just save me money—it gave me breathing room. Instead of stressing over bills, I’ve been able to explore my new city, try out restaurants, and even build up a small savings cushion.

🏡 Location, Location, Location

Because I have a roommate, I could afford to live in a much better area of town. Instead of settling for a long commute or a less safe neighborhood, we found a place in a vibrant area close to work, gyms, coffee shops, and all the spots we actually want to hang out in.

Living in a prime area as a new grad makes adjusting to a new city so much smoother—it’s like having a shortcut to getting plugged in.

🤝 Built-in Friendship & Support

Moving to a new city can be overwhelming. I’ll admit, I had visions of feeling isolated after college without the constant buzz of campus life. Having a roommate changed that.

It’s been awesome to come home to someone who gets what it’s like to be figuring out adulthood at the same time. From venting about work, to grocery runs, to late-night Whataburger trips, having that built-in support system has made the transition way less lonely.

🧹 Splitting the Adulting

One of the underrated benefits? Splitting responsibilities. Sharing chores, buying shared items like cleaning supplies, and even taking turns cooking makes life so much easier. It’s like easing into the “real world” with a teammate instead of doing it all solo.

🎉 Networking & Social Life

My roommate has their own friends and coworkers, which has doubled my opportunities to meet people. I’ve already been introduced to circles I never would’ve connected with otherwise. As an Aggie, I know the power of networking—and this has been another huge plus.

Final Thoughts

Sure, there are some trade-offs. Privacy isn’t the same as living alone, and you’ve got to find the right roommate (shoutout to all the Aggies who helped me navigate that search 🙌). But overall, choosing a roommate has made my move easier, cheaper, and way more fun.

If you’re another fresh Aggie grad moving to Dallas, Houston, Austin—or any new city—I’d say give roommates serious thought. It might just be the smartest (and most affordable) way to kick off your post-grad adventure!

👍 So, fellow Aggies—did you choose roommates or go solo after graduation? Drop your experience in the comments—I’d love to hear what worked for you!
