TOP Safety Features You Should Look For in Your New Apartment – For Texas Aggies!

🎓👍 TOP Safety Features You Should Look For in Your New Apartment – For Texas Aggies! 👍🎓

Howdy y’all! 🤠 As a brand-new Texas A&M grad, I’ve quickly realized that life after college comes with some BIG responsibilities—like finding a safe, comfortable apartment in my new city. Sure, price and location matter, but one thing I’ve learned fast is this: SAFETY should always come first.

Here are the top safety features I look for before signing that lease (because nothing ruins a fresh start faster than feeling unsafe in your own home):

🔑 1. Secure Entry & Controlled Access
I always check if the building has a gated entrance, controlled key fob access, or buzzer entry. If anyone can just walk in, that’s a big red flag. A secure entry helps keep unwanted visitors out—and makes me feel safer coming home late after work or Aggie game watch parties.

💡 2. Well-Lit Parking Lots & Hallways
Good lighting makes a HUGE difference. I don’t want to walk through dark hallways or sketchy parking lots at night. A properly lit complex not only helps prevent accidents but also keeps crime down.

📹 3. Security Cameras
Cameras around entrances, mailrooms, and garages are a must. Not only do they deter shady behavior, but they can also protect you in case something ever happens (like package theft or a hit-and-run in the parking lot).

🚪 4. Strong Locks & Deadbolts
I learned to always check the actual doors and locks before moving in. A good apartment should have solid deadbolts, peepholes, and preferably smart locks. If management doesn’t care about your front door, what does that say about the rest of the place?

🚒 5. Fire Safety Features
I check for working smoke detectors, sprinklers, and fire extinguishers. Sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many apartments overlook this. Fire safety is one of those things you don’t think about until you NEED it.

🚨 6. On-Site Security or Patrols
Some apartments have security guards or even off-duty officers living in the complex. Having a visible presence makes a huge difference in keeping everyone safe.

📦 7. Package Security Options
We all order from Amazon way too much 😂—so I make sure my apartment has package lockers or secure mailrooms. Porch pirates are everywhere, and I’d rather not have my new work wardrobe stolen.

🚶 8. Safe Location & Surroundings
Finally, I do my own research on the neighborhood. I drive around at night, check crime maps, and ask current residents about their experience. Sometimes the apartment itself looks fine, but the area around it is sketchy.

💭 Final Thoughts:
Moving to a new city as a Texas Aggie grad is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Taking time to prioritize safety gives me peace of mind—and lets me enjoy the fun stuff, like exploring my new city and meeting new friends.

If you’re an Aggie moving soon, don’t just ask about rent and square footage. Ask about safety, too! It’s worth it. 👍
