Texas Aggies Moving to HOUSTON: WHY LIVE IN THE HEIGHTS?
Howdy y’all! 👋 As a brand-new Aggie grad making the big move from College Station to Houston, I had one big question on my mind: Where should I live? Houston is HUGE, and every Aggie I know seems to have their own opinion. Midtown, Montrose, Post Oak, River Oaks — all strong contenders. But after a lot of exploring (and some trial-and-error), I quickly realized why so many young professionals — and especially fellow Aggies — are calling The Heights home.
Let me break it down for you 👇
🌳 Small-Town Charm in the Big City
After four years in Aggieland, I wasn’t ready to give up that cozy, community feel. The Heights has tree-lined streets, bungalow-style homes, and historic architecture that honestly makes it feel less like a bustling city and more like a neighborhood you want to stroll through after work. For an Aggie fresh out of school, that sense of home really matters.
🏡 A Great Mix of Old and New
One of the coolest things about The Heights is how it blends history with modern vibes. You’ll find 100-year-old houses sitting next to sleek new apartments and townhomes. As a new grad on a budget, renting a modern apartment with amenities (gym, pool, etc.) is way easier here than in pricier areas like River Oaks. Plus, many complexes in The Heights are Aggie-friendly and already full of other young professionals.
🍔 Foodie Paradise
Let’s be real — after four years of Fuego tacos and Layne’s, I was ready to upgrade my food game. The Heights is FULL of amazing spots:
Local breweries 🍻
Trendy coffee shops ☕
Brunch spots that will make your parents jealous when they visit 🍳
And if you’re a foodie like me, White Oak and 19th Street are packed with restaurants that range from laid-back Tex-Mex to upscale dining. Basically, there’s no way you’ll go hungry here.
🎉 Social Without Being Too Crazy
As much fun as Midtown’s nightlife can be, Aggies moving to Houston often want something social without the sketchy vibes. The Heights hits the sweet spot:
Chill breweries and wine bars ✅
Outdoor patios perfect for hanging out ✅
Easy Uber to Downtown or Washington Ave if you want a big night out ✅
It’s the balance Aggies look for — fun and social, but not too wild or unsafe.
🚗 Central but Convenient
Houston traffic is real, y’all. Living in The Heights makes commuting a whole lot easier since you’re super close to I-10, 610, and 45. Whether you’re working in Downtown, The Energy Corridor, or even the Galleria, The Heights keeps you central. For new grads starting jobs across the city, that flexibility is a lifesaver.
❤️ The Aggie Network Lives Here Too
The best part? You’ll find plenty of fellow Aggies already living in The Heights. Whether it’s spotting maroon hats at the local H-E-B, joining a Houston A&M Club event, or just making friends at your apartment complex, you’ll never feel too far from Aggieland.
👍 Final Thoughts
If you’re an Aggie grad moving to Houston, The Heights is honestly one of the BEST places to start your next chapter. You’ll get:
✅ A safe and social neighborhood
✅ Affordable modern apartments
✅ Great food, drinks, and walkability
✅ A community feel that still gives off those Aggie-town vibes
So if you’re scrolling apartments or figuring out where to sign your first lease — don’t sleep on The Heights. It might just feel like the next best thing to College Station.
