Texas Aggies Moving to Dallas: Why AVOID Uptown?
Howdy y’all—Gig ‘em! 🤘🐶 As a fresh Texas A&M grad navigating my new life in Dallas, one of the biggest questions I had was: Where should I live? Like many Aggies, I kept hearing “Uptown is the spot.” It’s flashy, it’s social, and on the surface, it feels like the obvious choice for young professionals.
But after digging deeper (and spending some time there), I realized Uptown might not be the dream neighborhood it’s hyped up to be—especially for new grads just starting out. Let me break it down for my fellow Aggies who might be considering the move.
1. The Rent Shock 💸
First thing’s first—Uptown is expensive. You’re looking at some of the highest rent prices in the entire Dallas area. Sure, you’ll find luxury apartments with rooftop pools and valet trash service, but that comes with a price tag that doesn’t exactly match a new grad’s entry-level paycheck.
For the same amount of money, you could rent a much bigger, newer apartment in areas like Addison, Frisco, or even the Village—and still have easy access to all the fun spots Uptown offers without paying Uptown prices.
2. The Parking Nightmare 🚗
As an Aggie, I was spoiled by the luxury of giant parking lots on campus. Uptown feels like the opposite. Parking is a constant battle—whether it’s finding a guest spot for friends, paying crazy rates at garages, or circling the block late at night just to find a space.
If you’re planning to have a car in Dallas (and let’s be honest, most of us will), Uptown will test your patience quickly.
3. Overcrowded & Overhyped 🍸
Yes, Uptown has the famous McKinney Avenue nightlife, trendy restaurants, and walkable bars. But here’s the reality: it’s often overcrowded, overpriced, and filled with people who aren’t exactly your “Aggie family vibe.” Think more “Instagram influencer” than “Howdy hospitality.”
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to visit with friends, but living there 24/7 can feel draining—especially when you’re looking for a true community after college.
4. The “Forever Under Construction” Zone 🚧
Another thing no one tells you: Uptown is constantly under construction. New towers, road work, and renovations are the norm. That means traffic headaches, noise at odd hours, and the not-so-glamorous reality behind the glossy brochures.
5. Not Always the Safest Option ⚠️
Here’s the truth—crime can happen anywhere in a big city. But Uptown has a reputation for car break-ins and late-night sketchy situations around the bars. For a new grad trying to balance late work nights and weekend fun, safety should be a top priority.
So… Where Should Aggies Look Instead? 🏡
The Village (Dallas): Tons of young professionals, more affordable, and still social.
Addison: Great food scene, nightlife, and a big Aggie crowd.
Frisco/Plano: Newer apartments, safer vibe, and growing job opportunities.
Knox-Henderson: Trendy but a little more laid back (and safer) than Uptown.
Final Thoughts
Uptown might sound like the glamorous choice, but if you’re an Aggie just starting out, it’s not always the smartest move. Think long-term: your rent, your community, and your lifestyle.
Dallas is full of amazing neighborhoods that give you more space, better value, and an environment where you’ll actually want to stick around. Visit Uptown for the fun nights out—but don’t feel pressured to live there just because it’s the “thing to do.”
