Howdy Ags! đŸ€˜đŸ¶ As a brand-new Texas A&M grad trying to make it in Dallas, I know firsthand how exciting (and stressful) it is to figure out where to live. Rent isn’t cheap, apartments are filling up fast, and we’re all looking for the best balance between safety, affordability, and convenience.

But let me be real with you—the Medical District in Dallas might not be the move for most new Aggies.

đŸ„ Why Aggies Consider the Medical District

At first glance, the Medical District sounds like a solid option:

It’s close to all the major hospitals (UT Southwestern, Parkland, Children’s).

The rent can look a little cheaper compared to Uptown or Oak Lawn.

It’s right off I-35, so you feel like you’re “close to everything.”

For a fresh grad trying to stretch that first paycheck, it might seem like a smart compromise. But here’s the catch


🚧 The “Sketch” Factor

Once you actually drive around and see the area at night, it’s a whole different story:

Safety Concerns: Certain blocks in the Medical District have higher crime rates—car break-ins and thefts are pretty common. Walking alone at night? Not the best idea.

Lack of Walkability: Unlike Uptown or even parts of Oak Lawn, there aren’t many fun restaurants or coffee shops within safe walking distance. You’ll feel isolated.

Transient Feel: Because it’s so tied to the hospitals, a lot of people are temporary residents (nurses on rotation, medical students). That means less of a community vibe for young grads who want to meet friends.

💾 Rent vs. Reality

Sure, the Medical District might advertise apartments that are a few hundred bucks cheaper than Uptown or Victory Park. But you have to ask yourself:

Is saving $200 a month worth worrying about your car overnight?

Is it worth not feeling comfortable walking your dog after dark?

Is it worth missing out on an area with more Aggie-friendly social life?

In most cases, probably not.

👍 Where Aggies Should Look Instead

If you’re eyeing the Medical District only because it’s “affordable,” here are some better options to consider:

Addison: More suburban, but safe and social with plenty of apartments.

Uptown / Knox-Henderson: Pricier, but packed with young professionals and walkable nightlife.

Oak Lawn: Fun mix of affordable(ish) spots and more community compared to Medical District.

The Medical District might look good on paper, but once you experience it, most Aggies realize it’s just not the right fit. If you’re serious about building your career and a fun social life in Dallas, invest in an area where you’ll feel safer and more connected.
