IS AUSTIN SAFE for Texas Aggies??

🌟 IS AUSTIN SAFE for Texas Aggies?? 🌟

Howdy y’all! 👋 As a brand-new Texas Aggie grad, I know the big question on many of our minds when moving to Austin for that first “real world” job is simple: Is Austin safe?

When I got my offer letter and realized I’d be heading to Austin, I started hearing all kinds of opinions. Some friends said, “Austin is the best place ever!” Others warned me about crime, traffic, and “sketchy areas.” The truth? Like any big city, Austin has its good and bad spots—but if you’re smart, it’s a fantastic place for new grads to live. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

💡 1. Austin Feels Safer Than Other Big Texas Cities

Compared to Houston or Dallas, Austin generally feels more laid-back. There’s a strong community vibe in many neighborhoods, and Aggies here tend to stick together. That said, car break-ins and bike thefts are common, especially near nightlife areas and college hangouts.

🚫 2. Areas to Be Cautious About

Every city has “sketch zones,” and Austin is no different. A few areas have higher crime rates—some parts of East Riverside, Rundberg, and near downtown after dark. Walking alone at night? Probably not your best move.

🏡 3. Safer Neighborhood Picks for Aggies

If you want peace of mind, consider these areas:

Mueller / East Austin – Trendy, young-professional vibe with tons of new apartments.

South Lamar / Zilker – Walkable, safe, and close to fun stuff without being in the heart of downtown chaos.

North Austin / Domain area – Safer, more suburban feel but with lots of shopping and restaurants.

👮 4. Safety Tips I’ve Learned Fast

Always lock your car (seriously, don’t leave anything visible).

Use Uber/Lyft after a night out instead of walking.

Get to know your neighbors—Aggies or not, people look out for each other.

Pick an apartment with good lighting, cameras, and secure access.

👍 5. The Aggie Factor

The BEST part? Austin has a huge network of Aggie grads. Whether through work, church, or the Texas A&M Club of Austin, you’ll always have someone to watch out for you. That community makes the city feel a lot smaller and safer.

👉 Bottom line: Austin is safe enough if you’re smart about where you live and how you get around. As Aggies, we’re resourceful and we look out for each other—so Austin can absolutely be an exciting and safe next step after graduation.
