Sketchy AUSTIN Areas for Texas Aggies To Live: RIVERSIDE AUSTIN

🎓🐶 Sketchy AUSTIN Areas for Texas Aggies To Live: RIVERSIDE AUSTIN  – Howdy Ags! 👋 As a brand-new Aggie grad making the big leap from College Station to Austin, I wanted to share some real talk about living in this city. Austin is exciting, fast-paced, and full of opportunities—but it also comes with some “sketch factor” depending on where you decide to live.

One of the areas that always comes up in conversation among new grads is Riverside. Let’s break it down Aggie-style.

🏙️ What Riverside Austin Is Like

Riverside is just southeast of downtown, and at first glance it looks like the perfect spot. It’s close to downtown nightlife, it has some of the cheapest rent in Austin, and you’ll definitely meet other young grads or students around there. A lot of folks are tempted because it seems like a fun, budget-friendly option right after graduation.

But… here’s the catch: Riverside is well known for being a sketchy area. If you Google it or ask around, most locals will warn you about safety concerns, old apartments, and crime.

⚠️ Why Riverside Feels Sketch

Higher Crime Reports – Break-ins, car thefts, and sketchy activity are unfortunately common. Leaving anything visible in your car is basically asking for trouble.

Older, Run-Down Apartments – Many of the complexes in Riverside look like they haven’t been updated since the 90s, and maintenance issues are a recurring theme.

Nighttime Safety – Walking alone at night isn’t a good idea in Riverside. Even locals will tell you to be cautious, especially in certain pockets closer to East Riverside Drive.

Party Vibe That Can Go Too Far – Because rent is cheaper, you’ll find a lot of college students and party-heavy crowds. If you’re hoping for a quieter, more professional vibe after Aggieland, this area might not be the best fit.

✅ Who Riverside Might Work For

If you’re an Aggie who:

Wants to save as much money as possible on rent,

Doesn’t mind living in an older apartment,

And feels comfortable being very alert about personal safety…

Then Riverside might work as a starter option. You’ll be close to downtown, near Lady Bird Lake, and have quick access to nightlife.

🚫 Why Many Aggie Grads Skip It

But if you’re looking for a place that feels safe, professional, and like the start of your new career life, most Aggie grads avoid Riverside. Instead, areas like South Lamar, The Domain, Mueller, or even North Austin often get recommended. They’re not always the cheapest, but you’ll likely feel a lot more at ease coming home at night.

👍 Final Aggie Take

As a new grad, moving to Austin is about balancing fun, budget, and safety. Riverside checks the “cheap and close to downtown” box, but it’s also one of the most sketchy spots in the city. If you’re an Aggie looking for peace of mind, you may want to invest a little more in another area.

Gig ‘em and stay safe, Ags! 👍🐾
