For Graduating Aggies: Avoiding the Top 5 Sketch Areas of Dallas

🎓🐶 For Graduating Aggies: Avoiding the Top 5 Sketch Areas of Dallas

Howdy Ags! 🤠 As a brand-new Texas A&M grad stepping into Dallas life, I quickly learned that not all neighborhoods are created equal. Dallas has some awesome areas (Uptown, Addison, Lower Greenville, etc.), but there are also spots that look “fun” at first glance and turn out to be… well… kinda sketch once you actually live there.

If you’re moving to Dallas after graduation, here are the Top 5 areas I’d recommend avoiding (at least as your first apartment choice). 👇

1. Deep Ellum

This one might surprise you. Deep Ellum is awesome for concerts, bars, and a night out 🎶🍻 — but living here is a different story. Break-ins, car theft, constant late-night noise, and safety concerns make it one of the worst spots for new grads to sign a lease. Visit, party, and enjoy the scene… but don’t live here.

2. West Dallas

Yes, it’s growing and has new development, but many parts of West Dallas are still rough around the edges. Crime is higher than you’d expect, and it can feel pretty isolated once you’re off the main roads.

3. Northwest Dallas (around Harry Hines)

This area has a long-standing reputation for being sketchy. Think industrial warehouses, crime issues, and not much of a young professional scene. As a new grad, you’ll feel isolated here.

4. Medical District

This spot looks tempting — new apartments, central location, and close to Uptown. But the reality? 🚨 Higher crime than you’d expect, break-ins, and a gritty vibe once you get off the main streets. It’s not the polished “downtown living” experience many grads hope for.

5. Trinity Groves

On the surface, Trinity Groves seems trendy with its restaurants and skyline views 🌆. But living there is a different story. Once the restaurants close, the area can feel empty and unsafe, with limited walkability and security issues. It’s better as a dining destination than a home base.

👍 Pro Aggie Tip:

If you’re looking for safe, fun, and Aggie-friendly areas — stick with:

Uptown (great social scene, very walkable 🏙️)

Lower Greenville/Knox-Henderson (laid-back but fun)

Addison (cheaper than Uptown, tons of restaurants)

Plano/Frisco (suburban but safe and growing fast)

🎓 Moving to Dallas is exciting, but choosing the wrong neighborhood can totally change your experience. Do your research, ask fellow Ags, and don’t let a “cheap rent deal” pull you into a sketchy area.

👍 Gig ’em and welcome to Dallas, Ags! 🐾
