🚨 Why Midtown Houston is a Sketchy Area for Texas Aggies to Live 🚨
Howdy Ags! 🧑🎓🐾 If you’re a new Texas A&M grad and about to move to Houston for your first big job, you’re probably looking at apartments and trying to figure out the safest and best areas to call home. A lot of new grads see “Midtown” on the map and think it looks cool since it’s close to Downtown, bars, and nightlife.
But here’s the real talk from someone who’s been through the Houston apartment search: Midtown may look like a good option, but it can be a sketchy area for new Aggies to live. Here’s why:
1. 🚓 High Crime & Safety Issues
Midtown has a reputation for petty crime, car break-ins, and safety concerns after dark. While it’s close to nightlife, that also attracts trouble. Many Aggies moving to Houston are fresh out of College Station, where walking around campus late at night felt safe. Midtown is a totally different world—walking alone at night here isn’t a good idea.
2. 💸 Overpriced for What You Get
On top of safety concerns, Midtown apartments are often expensive for the quality. You’ll see shiny-looking complexes online, but once you tour, you’ll notice things like poor upkeep, weird smells in hallways, or security gates that don’t even work. For the price, you could live somewhere nicer and safer.
3. 🌃 Noise & Nightlife Overload
Yes, Midtown has a lot of bars and clubs… but if you’re trying to wake up early for work or want peace on weeknights, you’ll quickly regret it. Midtown can get loud, rowdy, and chaotic. Think sirens, loud music, and drunk crowds outside at 2 AM. That’s fun for a night out, but not so fun when it’s where you actually live.
4. 🚘 Parking Nightmares
If you have a car (and most Aggies do when moving to Houston), Midtown is a parking headache. Street parking is a mess, and even apartments with garages can have security issues. Break-ins are common, and visitors will struggle to find safe parking spots.
Better Options for Aggie Grads ✅
If you’re set on living inside the loop, consider these safer and more “Aggie-friendly” areas instead:
The Heights – Safer, more residential vibe, still close to fun spots.
Montrose – Artsy, walkable, and way less sketchy than Midtown.
River Oaks/Upper Kirby – Pricier, but clean, safe, and professional.
Final Word for Aggies 🏠
As a new Aggie grad, your first apartment sets the tone for your new city life. Midtown may look fun and central, but it comes with safety risks, noise, and overpriced apartments. Houston has plenty of other areas where you can live comfortably, meet friends, and still enjoy the city without worrying every time you park your car or walk home.
💡 Aggie Tip: Always tour apartments in person, check reviews, and visit the area both during the day and at night before signing a lease.
