Midtown vs Heights vs Montrose: A Guide for Aggie New Grads in Houston

📍 Midtown vs Heights vs Montrose: A Guide for Aggie New Grads in Houston – Howdy, Ags! đź‘‹ As a brand-new Texas A&M grad stepping into the big city of Houston, one of the biggest questions I had was: Where should I live? Houston is massive, and each neighborhood has its own vibe. After talking with fellow Aggies, touring a ton of apartments, and spending some weekends exploring, I’ve narrowed it down to three of the most popular areas for young professionals: The Heights, Midtown, and Montrose.

Here’s my honest breakdown from an Aggie perspective ⬇️

🏡 The Heights: The #1 Choice for Aggies

The Heights is my top pick for Aggie new grads, and here’s why: it has that perfect mix of charm, safety, and things to do. You get a more relaxed feel than Midtown, but still plenty of fun options right around the corner.

👉 Pros:

Trendy coffee shops, breweries, and some of Houston’s best restaurants

A more residential, community-oriented feel (great for easing into city life)

Safer and quieter than Midtown while still social and active

Tree-lined streets and historic character give it a unique vibe

👉 Cons:

Rent can be higher in the most walkable sections

Commute times to Downtown or the Medical Center can vary with traffic

📣 Aggie Tip: If you’re looking for balance—some nightlife, some calm, and a solid community feel—The Heights will feel like home quicker than anywhere else.

🌆 Midtown: The Social but Sketchy Spot

Midtown is the go-to if you want to dive headfirst into Houston’s nightlife. Bars, clubs, and brunch spots are all right outside your door. But while it’s fun, Aggies should know Midtown can also feel sketchy at times—especially late at night.

👉 Pros:

Tons of nightlife and restaurants within walking distance

Central location—close to Downtown and the Med Center

Lots of modern apartment complexes with great amenities

👉 Cons:

Crowded and noisy on weekends

Safety can be hit-or-miss depending on the block

Smaller apartments with higher rents

📣 Aggie Tip: Midtown is perfect if you want an “Aggieland 2.0” vibe with lots of other young grads, but always prioritize safety. Choose a complex with gated access, secured parking, and be mindful walking home after dark.

🎨 Montrose: The Artsy, Eclectic Option

Montrose has always been Houston’s most unique neighborhood—full of creativity, diversity, and a little bit of everything.

👉 Pros:

Inclusive and welcoming vibe, with a strong sense of community

Art galleries, vintage shops, and great food options everywhere

Central location with easy access to Midtown, Heights, and Downtown

👉 Cons:

Older apartments and tight parking situations

Less polished compared to Midtown or Heights

Can feel a bit unpredictable depending on the block

📣 Aggie Tip: Montrose is a great choice if you’re adventurous, artsy, or just want something less “cookie-cutter.”

🏅 Final Thoughts: Which One Fits You?

The Heights → Best overall choice for new Aggie grads (safe, fun, and balanced).

Midtown → Best if you crave nightlife, but keep in mind it can feel sketchy.

Montrose → Best for grads who want something eclectic and different.

🎓 As a new Aggie grad, I realized it’s less about finding the “perfect” area and more about picking what matches your lifestyle. Houston is HUGE, so don’t be afraid to try one area for a year and then switch if you want a new experience.
