🏠 What Are the Top Areas for Texas Aggie Grads to Live in Houston?

Howdy y’all! 👋 As a brand-new Texas A&M grad, I know many of us are making the move to Houston for our first jobs after graduation. The Bayou City has a TON of neighborhoods to choose from—but not all of them are the right fit for fresh Aggie grads looking for a balance of affordability, safety, social life, and convenience.

After talking with other Aggie alumni and exploring the city myself, here are the top areas for Texas Aggie grads to live in Houston:

1. The Heights 🌳 (Aggie Favorite)

If you’re looking for a mix of charm, fun, and safety, The Heights is where it’s at. Picture walkable streets, bungalow-style homes, coffee shops, and bars that still have a local feel. It’s a great option if you want to be close to downtown without the noise of Midtown. Many Aggies end up here because it feels like a good transition from College Station life—community-oriented but still exciting.

Best for: grads who want a social but safe environment with a more “grown-up” vibe.

2. River Oaks 🏡 (Upscale but Convenient)

River Oaks is definitely on the pricier side, but if you’ve landed a solid job and want something polished, this neighborhood offers top-tier safety and convenience. It’s minutes from both Downtown and The Galleria, plus it’s packed with restaurants, shopping, and entertainment.

Best for: grads with higher budgets who want safety and luxury with quick commutes.

3. Montrose 🎨 (Trendy & Social)

Montrose is full of energy—coffee shops, live music, art, and nightlife. It’s super diverse and has plenty of apartments that are more affordable than River Oaks or The Heights. The area can feel a little sketch in parts, but if you pick the right spot, Montrose is one of the most fun neighborhoods for young grads.

Best for: grads who want walkability, nightlife, and creative energy.

4. Washington Avenue / Lower Heights 🍻

If you want to be in the middle of the action, Washington Ave is lined with bars, restaurants, and apartments filled with other young professionals. It’s more social and lively than The Heights, but still within reach of downtown.

Best for: grads who want a very active nightlife and don’t mind the noise.

5. Midtown 🚎 (Social but Sketchy)

Midtown is known for its nightlife, with tons of bars and clubs. You’ll meet a lot of young people here, but safety can be hit or miss depending on the block. If you move here, be smart about your apartment choice. Many grads start here because it’s affordable and social, then move later to The Heights or River Oaks once they’re more established.

Best for: grads who want maximum social life and don’t mind a little extra sketch factor.

Final Thoughts 🎓

Houston is HUGE, but if you’re an Aggie grad starting your career here, these five neighborhoods give you the best mix of affordability, safety, and social connection.

My advice? Tour apartments in person and don’t just pick based on photos. Drive around at night, check traffic to your job, and look into safety ratings before you sign a lease.

Gig ’em and welcome to Houston, Ags! 👍🐾
